Why Dumbarton Oaks?
The Beatrix Farrand Garden Association annually presents the Bellefield Design Lecture, selecting engaging speakers to highlight significant topics in landscape architecture and garden design.
This year, as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the restoration of our Farrand-designed garden, we turn our focus to Dumbarton Oaks, considered Beatrix Farrand’s masterpiece. As caretakers of one of her few remaining residential gardens, we invite you to participate in preserving her legacy as America’s pioneering female landscape architect.
Jonathan Kavalier serves as Director of Gardens and Grounds at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC, where he focuses on preserving Beatrix Farrand’s historic design within a 21st century horticultural context. His worked in Madagascar on ornamental and ecological restoration using endemic Malagasy plants.
He has overseen public gardens and organizational development for the Smithsonian Institution and the Architect of the Capitol. Jonathan's lecture will not only focus on Beatrix Farrand but will also highlight the work of stewardship & preservation of historic gardens in these changing times.
